Meet our Directors and Senior Staff Meet Our Directors and Senior Staff
From Left to Right: Amy, Craig, Lauren, John, Sutter, Becky and Ryleigh
Relaxing at the Western Association of Independent Camps Conference, Napa, California 2005 Our Late Founders John Lindskog and Lynne Evarts: John and Lynne started Coppercreek in 1965 after meeting at Kennolyn Camp in Soquel, California and purchasing Coppercreek’s 120 acres. John and Lynne homesteaded in the property’s log cabin along with their two small children, Mike and Lauren. Over subsequent years, John built much of Coppercreek with his own two hands, while Lynne marketed the camp and raised their children. Although they divorced in the early seventies, they remained business partners continuing to invest their hearts in the camp. Sadly, both John and Lynne have passed away in recent years but their spirits continue to live on here at Coppercreek and we are sure will continue to touch the lives of children and young adults for years to come. Coppercreek is their gift to the world and we, as stewards, will continue to cherish and protect the special camp experience they envisioned. For 40 years, Coppercreek has had a profound positive impact on the lives of literally thousands of children, teens, and young men and women from around the United States and the world.
Lornie has been at camp since age 2. Daughter of founders John Lindskog and Lynne Evarts, she has been Coppercreek’s Director for the past 14 years. Lornie created and ran our TREK program for 9 years before taking over the daily operation of camp. She is the mother of Sutter, age 14, and lives here at camp. Lauren’s great love is horses so we can blame our highly successful riding program on her. She is a CHA Master Instructor, and oversees the daily operation of our Equestrian program year round. Lornie is accomplished in many aspects of horsemanship, from dressage to western reining to driving. Along with her “main” job of keeping 40 horses, 5 riding staff and many young riders happy, Lornie also finds time to coach Greenville’s Junior Varsity and Junior High Volleyball teams, help Becky with staff hiring and marketing, and speak with prospective camp families on the phone. Lornie is a graduate of UC Santa Barbara, and holds a California secondary teaching credential from UC Davis. Becky and Craig Hogland, Directors: Becky and Craig began at Coppercreek 15 years ago as counselors after their college graduations, Becky from UC Santa Barbara and Craig from CSU Chico. For both of them, that summer camp counselor job led to two long- term commitments, one to Coppercreek, and one to each other. They moved through the camp administration as Program Directors, Assistant Director, and Directors here at camp in the summer. Winters, they both worked at Northstar at Tahoe, Becky as the Ticketing Manager and Craig as the Grounds Maintenance manager. Since 2002, Craig and Becky have worked full time for Coppercreek (although Becky still “moonlights” as the Season Pass and Ticket Manager at Northstar several days a week from November to April). Craig supervises our kitchen, landscaping and maintenance departments. His once-per-session Barbeque Nights have become legendary. He is also in charge of our High Ropes Course, our Lifeguard Training Program, and supervises many of our kayaking river trips. Becky coordinates enrollment of campers, manages our marketing efforts, talks to prospective families on the phone, and is one of our “missing home” experts always willing to provide a shoulder to cry on, a hug and a cup of hot cocoa in the program office. In 1998, Craig and Becky married and in February of 2001, Ryleigh Susan blessed their lives.
Amy Murray, Assistant Director and Director of Teen Programs: Amy started at Coppercreek in 1996 as our youngest girl’s counselor and Drama Instructor. The next summer, she took on our CIT program, which has grown under her guidance to having a waiting list very early every summer. In 2001, Amy was promoted to Director of Teen Programs. In this role, she supervises our CIT Directors, as well as supporting and acting as a resource for all of our teen leadership and cabin staff. She graduated from the University of Alberta with a degree in elementary education, where her major was taught totally in French. In the fall of 2004, Amy began grad school at Oregon State University, studying Child Development and Family Studies (preparing for an illustrious and lucrative career as a summer camp director…) Amy also takes care of all of the things that neither Lornie or Becky can manage, including administrative duties, ordering supplies, driving kids to school, and a million other little things that come up daily at summer camp.
